Are You a Caregiver?

A caregiver provides assistance with the fundamental needs and daily activities of living. These activities can include, but are not limited to:

- Bathing

- Grooming

- Managing Medication Boxes/Refilling Prescriptions

- Shopping for groceries and/or Preparing meals

- Performing Housekeeping tasks

- Managing Finances and Paying Bills

- Arranging and Providing Transportation for Medical Appointments

Even if it's not a full-time role, the time spent aiding a family member may not be recognized as caregiving. You might think, "It's just what families do for each other." Yet, if you regularly undertake any or all of the aforementioned tasks, you are indeed acting as a caregiver.

You Are Not Alone

The population of caregivers in the U.S. is increasing annually. The National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP report that approximately 34.2 million Americans have provided unpaid care to an adult aged 50 or older in the past year. Among them, around 15.7 million individuals are caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. [National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP. (2015). Caregiving in the U.S.]

Caregiver Challenges

For most individuals, caregiving is not a professional role. Consequently, many balance their regular employment with the demands of caring for their families. This dual responsibility can be overwhelming, leading to several frequently encountered challenges, such as:

- Elevated Stress

- Depression

- Anxiety

- Financial Burden

- Work-related Issues and Absenteeism
